Marine Oil Spill & Plastic Waste Collection Device
Technology Overview
It is estimated that there are currently over 150 million tons of plastic waste in the seas and 10 million tons more of plastic waste are transported annually into the seas. If no action is taken, the amount of plastic waste going to the seas each year will rise to 29 million tonnes in 2040. Marine waste problems are solved through efficient waste management, the reduction of plastic use and the collection of waste that has already ended up in the sea, for recycling, if possible
Clewat is a fast-growing cleantech company from Finland, focusing on solving the plastic waste, excess biomass, oil spills and other pollution problems of our oceans, seas, rivers, and lakes for municipal, port and marine applications. Vessels are supported by experts who have knowledge of marine litter, and other problems of the water systems. Clewat is currently looking for collaborations with research institutions and the industry
Technology Features, Specifications and Advantages
Clewat’s patent pending innovation is based on the utilization of the water flow. Using a small amount of energy, it is possible to attain high efficiency to the activities performed. The vessel is effective and can collect up to 200 m3 of waste per hour from water including micro plastic particles as small as 0.5 mm. This technology can also be applied to marine diesel collection when oil spills occur. The solution brings unique operational efficiency to coastal marine plastic collection and easier oil spill oil collection. It is also a practical solution for removal and collection of hydrosphere invasive species (vegetive reproducing ones like water hyacinth and milfoils) collection and removal.
Potential Applications
The demand for excess biomass is constantly increasing, as by further processing the material, it can be utilized for example as biofuel. The size of the global oil spill response market was estimated at $108 billion in 2020 and it is projected to reach $129 billion. This method oil collection method is effective and quickly scalable.
The potential applications include:
- Collection of marine plastic, harmful vegetation (water hyacinth, algae, Eurasian watermilfoil, sargassum etc.) and oil spills.
- Creation of strong value chain where marine plastics collected goes to the recycling or chemical recycling
- Organic materials can be turned into biogas, composting, producing food or raw material for medicine industry
Customer Benefit
- Cleaning of waterways and oceans
- Collected materials can be recycled, reused, and valorized
