Recycling of Spent Lithium-ion Battery Materials
Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been the preferred portable energy source in recent decades. The tremendous growth in the use of LIBs has resulted in a great number of spent LIBs discarded into landfill. Disposal of these spent LIBs cause serious environmental problems because the batteries are made of hazardous components such as heavy metals and electrolytes.
Most of the batteries that do get recycled undergo a high-temperature melting-and-extraction or smelting process similar to ones used in the mining industry to recover precious materials such as nickel and cobalt. The process is energy intensive, costly to build and operate, and require sophisticated equipment to treat harmful emissions generated by the smelting process. Despite the high costs, these plants do not recover all valuable battery materials.
All of the precious metals contained in disposed LIBs are valuable resources and these can be rejuvenated into battery grade cathode materials. Based in Singapore, the technology owner has developed a hardware module that converts crushed LIB materials (black mass) into battery-grade cathode materials that can be used to manufacture new batteries. Based on a proprietary hydrometallurgical co-precipitation method, the process skips production of mixed precious metal salts and immediately produces re-usable battery grade cathode materials to offer up a value proposition that can increase recycling profits by up to four times and a less than one year recovery of the cost of the hardware module.
The highly versatile solution may process a mixture of LIB materials from different chemistries in a single batch, including lithium cobalt oxide (LCO), lithium manganese oxide (LMO), lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC) and lithium nickel cobalt aluminium oxide (NCA). The production outputs are battery-grade NMC hydroxides (622/532/111/811), and the by-products may include lithium carbonate and sodium sulphate.
This technology offers a solution to reduce the dependency on mining finite precious battery metals though recycling. The hardware module may be integrated with existing recycling process plant to improve and enhance the recycling process and the profits of traditional battery recycling facilities. The technology owner is seeking industry partners to license and adopt the technology, preferably companies with an interest to invest in or build a LIB recycling plant. This would apply to existing and future battery manufacturers and recyclers with supply chain capabilities to collect or buy spent batteries and crush/shred the same into black mass for processing into battery grade cathode materials.
