Redesigning Coconut Waste for Sustainable & Affordable Pallets
Technology Overview
This technology offers a strong, compliant and 100% bio-based pallets from pressed coconut husks using optimized processing methods from an agricultural waste that is otherwise mostly burned.
The key value proposition of this technology involves the use of whole coconut husks and does not require the use of chemical or synthetic binders to achieve the required high strength and high density properties.
This technology aims to reduce companies’ CO2 emissions and costs, as well as minimize the impact of the global wood shortage to replace single-use wooden pallets for the Asian market. Approximately 1.7 billion pallets are required annually in Asia, translating to about 170 million trees deforested every year, with an addressable market of 300-400 million pallets.
Focus will be in commercial partnerships with multinational export companies in Asia that are impact driven to lower CO2 emissions in their respective supply chain. Furthermore, explore joint-venture partners to co-invest and co-manufacture the pallets in coconut growing countries.
Technology Features, Specifications and Advantages
This technology enables the production of high quality pallets without the use of synthetic resins or glue, and would be the first of its kind in the Asian market utilizing only the fibers from coconut husks. The material quality surpasses Medium Density Fiberboards (MDF) or particle boards, and are export-compliant. The technology is highly scalable and can be implemented to coconut growing countries that has vast amounts of coconut husks unutilized.
Potential Applications
This technology can be primarily used for shipping and exporting to replace the growing demand for single-use wooden pallets. Circular afterlife can enable the pallets to be used as a soil improver to replace peat moss in developed countries. Future developments for the pallets would be targeting low cost and sustainable building or construction materials.
Customer Benefit
- Quantifiable & measurable carbon footprint reduction while lowering total supply chain costs.
- Depending on local wood prices, at least 10% savings compared to current solutions.
- No need for chemical or synthetic binders
- By purchasing the waste streams that are most often burned and creating value to farmer cooperatives thus preventing trees being cut and transported (where timber is sourced most of the time from other continents) to manufacture single-use pallets.
